North West Region - Denis Thorpe FBIPP

9 May 2012
7.30pm
Statham Lodge, Warrington Road, Statham, Lymm, WA13 9BP
As a Guardian photojournalist between 1974 and 1996, Denis Thorpe was well placed to record a period of upheaval in the British political and cultural landscape. From reportage of the miners’ strike and Strangeways riot to celebrity portraiture and travelogues, he captured the essence of the age. Author of  ‘A Long Exposure’ 100 years of Guardian Photography in Manchester.

We’ve had the privilege of hearing Denis before and this quote from member Ray Troll sums up what we can expect again.

“Thank you for organising the talk last night!
The Denis Thorpe talk was without any doubt the best BIPP talk I have ever attended. Such a diminutive and quiet man who produced imagery that spoke loud to the world without the need for words. I left the event feeling inspired by the fantastic imagery I had seen, but also by the quiet enthusiasm which is still very much a part of Denis Thorpe”

This will be a very special night and a rare chance to get a first hand insight into some iconic images.

National Photography Symposium 2012 - Redeye

National Photography Symposium

27 April - 29 April 2012

The National Photography Symposium explores the most critical and talked-about subjects for photography and photographers. Now in its fourth year, it's strongly recommended for anyone interested in the development of photography in the UK.

In 2012 it takes place in collaboration with World Photo London at and around Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 1LA.

It consists of a range of panel discussions, presentations and practical sessions. There are also plenty of opportunities to meet and chat informally, and look at photography.

In 2012 the fourth Symposium covers issues around ethics and the press; the pros and cons of collaboration and co-operation for both individuals and organisations; recent developments in archiving; new patterns and models for employment in photography; and the effects on photography of global economic change. Around 20 speakers, including many top professionals from across photography, will present on these and other subjects.

Francis Hodgson, the writer and photography critic of the Financial Times, called it "The most important forum in UK photography."

Karen Strunks of the 4AM project said "What a weekend. I am all photography inspired."

Having graduated with a Media & Cultural Studies degree from Sunderland University in 1996, Helen moved to Yorkshire to take a job as a photographer for Ross Parry – a press agency that supplied photographs for the National newspapers and magazines.

Before long she moved to ITV Yorkshire as their stills photographer, shooting the publicity stills for productions such as Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Touch of Frost, and The Royal.

After eight years at ITV she set up Helen Turton Photography, which allowed her to expand her television work and also explore her passion for portraiture and lifestyle.

In 2010 Helen was awarded British Institute of Professional Photography ‘Best Licentiateship Panel’ for a body of work which included images of Yorkshire’s World champion triathlete Alistair Brownlee, Emmerdale actress Emma Atkins, and landscape images of Bolton Abbey.

She continues to work with television and in celebrity portraiture.
